Scientific Approach in Learning

Here is one of hottest issue recently. It has emerged as result of the launch of new curriculum. This approach focuses on how teaching material and process become more scientific, using empirical fact, logic phenomenon, or rational value.

I am trying to simplifize this for my own interest. Reading some articles, books, and technical clues rather makes me spinning around. To break it into some pieces, I would like to concern on the process of learning would be done applying this approach. The process goes to three focuses, indeed, those three stuffs are important, attitude (know why), knowledge (know what?), and skill (know how).

By looking at these three objects, the teacher is supposed to create a productive, innovative, creative, and affective learning. Still, the aim of this is to produce students who are balanced both in soft and hard skills.

It has some steps need to be done in teaching and learning process which are: observing, questioning, associating, experimenting, and networking. Actually, I have read some previous approaches that let students to think critically or involved in a problem-solving. In short, this is also aimed to make students can identify, compare, analyze, evaluate and understand a topic clearly. Furthermore, students can apply their knowledge, use it in their daily life. See, today there are a lot of people who know how something should be but prefer to avoid their knowledge.   

There are three methods which support scientific approach: discovery learning, project based learning, and problem based learning. These methods

Nulis Sampai Keriting

Dua minggu terakhir terdiri dari hari-hari yang membuat pusing. Jika minggu sebelumnya kepala panas karena harus berhadapan dengan komputer dan perhitungan angka serta kertas-kertas jelek tapi tidak boleh hilang, maka minggu ini adalah penderitaan yang harus ditanggung oleh jari (kanan tepatnya) karena entahlah siapa yang bisa disalahkan atas kegilaan ini. Raport kurikulum 2013 benarlah bukan raport biasa, ukurannya saja sudah lebih besar dari raport sebelumnya begitu juga lembaran yang harus diisi. Hebatnya, benda ini baru datang Senin siang tepatnya, hingga proses menulis baru bisa dimulai Selasa pagi.

Well, look at this precious but simply annoying finally. Ada delapan halaman yang harus diisi, okelah jika kegiatan ini bisa dilakukan sesantai menyetrika, but ir's not. Menulis raport sama bosannya dengan menulis ijazah untuk ajaran tahun lalu, tidak santai sama sekali, harus fokus, karena salah sekali saja you can't make it. Tidak bisa di tip x sesuka hati apalagi di coret.

Let me describe the things, dimulai dari bismillah, eh dimulai dari cover yang hanya nama dan nomor induk serta NISN, tapi nulisnya harus rapi, harus agak cantik dikit biar enak dilihat. Lembar kedua (masih biasa) berupa data sekolah, nomor-nomor, alamat, website, whatever. Terus biodata siswa (masih sama saja) dengan biasanya. Nah memasuki halaman ke empat hingga delapan inilah perjuangan sesungguhnya dimulai. Ada lima data atas yang harus ditulis, dua tanda tangan di bawah, lalu nilai-nilai. Nilai ini berupa tiga bentuk, lima kolom tepatnya, dua untuk pengetahuan (satu nilai rentang 1-4), satu predikat A-D, kemudian dua untuk psikomotor dan satu untuk sikap. Kolom nilai disertai dengan nama guru dan seterusnya. Nah, belakangnya pemirsa membuat eneg sumpah, soalnya setiap nilai-nilai yang imut itu harus dideskripsikan panjang lebar untuk masing-masing ranah. Sudah terbayang seberapa menderitanya? Sudah, ah kalau belum mampirlah kemari dan rasakan sendiri penderitaan jempol yang tiada tara. Ini saja menyempatkan diri sejenak untuk berbagi, untuk bercerita pada dinding bisu ini. Tiap orang punya cara sendiri untuk tidak menjadi tertekan bukan? *Ugh defensive.

Baiklah, baiklah kenapa harus meracau jika ini yang disebut resiko pekerjaan? :D huft. Untuk ukuran saya yang sudah jarang sekali menulis dengan pena/ pensil, menulis raport dan ijazah memanglah sesuatu. Tapi tidak apa-apa, demi kau dan si buah hati, hmm demi anak-anak tercinta yang jumlahnya juga banyak sekali untuk ukuran kelas aktif. Jadilah saya ibu yang harus bersabar tentu saja. Bukan hanya menulis, saya juga harus membawa raport ini bolak balik rumah-kantor, jadi bawa-bawa karung tiap hari, apa sebab? I HAVE TO FINISH THIS. Ehm, mungkin tepatnya these should be done before this coming Saturday. Fighting!

Kurikulum 2013: Model Raport

Tidak hanya pendekatan pembelajaran yang berbeda pada kurikulum ini, penilaiannya pun berbeda. Saya katakan konversi nilai ini ruwet, karena dari nilai puluhan dirubah ke skala 1-4 lalu diberi predikat. Hmm, yang jadi wali kelas akan mengalami masa-masa sulit (weh, being complicated is a part of my life). Penilaian terdiri dari tiga aspek (mirip dengan KTSP), terdiri dari aspek pengetahuan, keterampilan, dan sikap.

Pada kurikulum tingkat satuan pendidikan skala nilai yang digunakan adalah 0-100 untuk aspek kognitif, dan A,B,C, dan D untuk aspek afektif. Pada kurikulum ini skala nilai yang dipakai untuk aspek kognitif dan psikomotor 1 hingga 4, seperti nilai kuliahan. Nilai terendah adalah 1,00 atau D dan tertinggi A atau 4,00. Sedangkan aspek afektif per mata pelajaran dinilai dengan SB = Sangat Baik, B = Baik, C = Cukup, K = Kurang.

Nilai puluhan di konversi ke skala 1-4 dengan cara dibagi 100 lalu dikali 4, hasil konversi kemudian diberi predikat sebagai berikut untuk aspek pengetahuan dan keterampilan:

Ugh, pusing kan? Lumayan, saya sampai harus menjelaskan berulang kali ke orang tua murid tentang proses dan perubahan penilaian ini. Beberapa orang tua hayyu aja untuk yang sudah pernah kuliah tapi beberapa menatap dengan tatapan kosong hingga saya jelaskan singkat saja, kalau nilainya dibawah B berarti anak bapak/ ibu tidak lulus mata pelajaran dan jika terdapat tiga nilai dibawah B dalam ketiga aspek diatas maka peserta didik tidak naik kelas. Mari kita berjuang, fighting :)

My Favorite Student

After being chosen as the most favorite teacher several years ago :D, I decided to have my favorite student as well each year. It doesn't mean I give more (special attention or else) to this student, but I just love the way she/ he does.

I am going to tell you my fav one this year. I have just met her last month, but she has become my most dedicated student among others. She is the cutest, "unyu-unyu" little chubby girl. She is a second year student of elementary school, not my senior students, but my private student. Actually, I have taught from morning to evening recently, to be busy, to share more, to do (whatever) I can do to grow gracefully.

Alright, let's get back to my little Gaby. She comes to my house twice/ three times a week in the evening. She comes on time, sometimes in time, in her flowery gown or cute casual blouse. She always brings her Hello Kitty stuffs, bag, eraser, books, or many other that sweetie dolls on it. She will sit silently, answer my greeting, then asks me many questions then. Not only that, she also brings her colorful pencils or pens that I have to sign her book with different color each meeting. 

I was surprised when the first time she asked me, "Do we have homework, ibu?" (Well, she still calls me ibu although I have asked her to call me Miss Winda or mam like other students do). After that night, we have homework for each meeting. She has a special book for that, means she loves to write many works there. Okay, she is not only a diligent, innocent, and cute, she is also easy to catch my explanation about the materials. She only needs once or twice sometimes then she will remember the lessons very well. Hm, she is not like my early elementary students who loved to jump and run back and forward, but of course she is just a kid that sometimes she does something weird for me.

Teaching younger students has taught me how to be "more like a mom than a teacher".

Science-Based Learning

Welcome to a new smaller class where the participants are divided into 6 classes, means fewer people, more closed friends. I met some new teachers that I haven't met in these two days.

Well, today is fun, today is talking about the technical stuff of science based learning or scientific research in detail. I even can't take a breath that a lot since it's such a busy day, but for writing blogs :D. Actually I have done my part of our small projects, so while others are working, let me share a piece of cake I have gotten and saved in my mind.

After getting sort of explanations and descriptions about science method from the humble master tutor (He is just humble, smart (Dr), and handsome :D, I find a light in the long darkness of science stuff. Aha...I m not serious about that, I am still confused about many.

We have been practicing, looking at another ease of doing or making a project. I am definitely sure this method is not always applied for science lesson but also others, my subject actually. That's why there is a new approach this era called Scientific Approach for supporting 2013 curriculum. Science combines many lessons. Isn't the purpose of this is to make students think critically or help them ready to solve their problem in scientific ways. Certainly they will need that. I am imagining what I can do when I get back to my lovely classes, simply miss my students.

OPSI

I am not talking about "option" in general, it's just another new terminology that I have just met in this program.

Most of students work are about applied science, so the director asked more about pure science or social. Ah ya, I am asking myself about the difference between both science above, then I get a short answer. Basic science or the pure one is including Math, Biology, Physic, and Chemistry. While applied science consists of these fields, such as Ecology, Machine and Electronic, Informatic Well, I am amazed that there is a special space for language, literature, and art. Should I say wow? Although I still don't exactly know how is the form of this kind of research in this field.


the selections process:

1. Presentation (Students may use Indonesian or English, English will be better, he said).
2. Poster and Exhibition.
3. Assessment.

Assesment:

• Students send the result of their experiment or the report.
• Juries select the best work based on some criteria decided before.
• Students who are selected will be invited to come to Jakarta for another selection steps.

Nurturing Research Culture

Dunia penelitian adalah dunia yang sepi, Prof. DR. Ir. Ahmad Jasidi, M.Eng said in his speech yesterday. It’s just easy to boost art world, like creating new singers, new boy or girl groups. Also for some other events, like Cycling Community, or Car Free Day community, this kind of groups can improve the followers extremely quickly. Let’s look back to science community, the progress runs so slowly, even almost unknown, only very few who run it. That’s why this training for about 450 teachers from all over Indonesia is being held. At first I was a little bit surprised then asked myself what is the purpose of this? Spending money for the end of the year, but wait, wait, there is the aim behind this. Sponsored by Intel, this training wishes teachers can share what they get here to the students, ask them to write, become active participants then can be a part of ISEF in United States next upcoming year. Intel, LIPI, and Kemdikmen want this information spread out evenly since most teachers from different areas are invited.

SAInS (School in Action for Innovation in Science)

I would like to take a short note about the topic that had been delivered by Rebecca Johnson from Columbia University.

She started by saying her personal experience, her fear of science like many kids have, just like what i have actually. She took her bachelor purely in social then recently she just turned into somebody else who loves science and lives science as well. So, here the wise words came then never give up if you find your students aren’t interested yet, maybe someday they will just love it.

That’s only an acknowledgment by the way. The point is about what she called STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). It is a new (most recent even in America) curriculum that concerns on scientific things a lot more than others do. There are several schools in New York that has been implementing this new idea and it brings such a greater output. Well yah, why science? Is that only about calculating or similar stuffs? It is related to the theme of this huge event, nurturing research culture through Indonesia educator academy 2013. One of many ways to increase the quality of education is making research as a part of lifestyle, not something unreachable.

The curriculum is simply applied based on these current educational theories discussed, which are constructivism, differentiated learning, inquiry, experimental learning, project-based learning, outdoor education or expeditionary learning. Well, if I m not mistaken some of those methods have been instructed to be implemented. But, there’s always but in this case.

Let’s come to the big inventory of this STEM Education, they call this “FAB LAB” or Fabrication Laboratory. It is a simple laboratory that produces many different fancy stuffs. Indeed, it needs a lot of money, that’s why only some schools run the program. Rebecca said she is now making a project for transferring the idea to Indonesia. That program has brought her here.

Scientific Event for Both Teachers and Students

Last night, Ms. Indri from LIPI mentioned some annual events that have been held for long time but the participants are still not even. The winner are mostly from similar schools from year to year. So, she asked us to be involved. There are many of them, such as, PIRNAS (a scientific camp), LKIR, or NYIA. The greatest one of course is ISEF that will be done in Los Angeles next year.

At first, I was asking my presence here since I am not a science teacher nor fond of this world. But, I can say I can be the part of social science. And the most demanding and important thing that those events need English as the language of presentation. So, it's not that bad uh? Being in the middle of many teachers who have (let say) the same mission. 

Darma Wanita

Dulu sering mendengar frasa ini, saat ibu biasanya sibuk sekali memakai baju seragam ungu kemerahan lalu melenggang ke sekolah ayah. Tak pernah memikirkan sebegitu dalam setelah itu karena tidak pernah terlibat dalam acara ini. Nah hari ini malah diminta datang. Kalau tidak salah darma wanita itu kan persatuan istri-istri pegawai negeri, lah kalau yang jadi pegawai negerinya wanita saja (jomblo lagi) apa juga disebut bagian darma wanita? *tepuk jidat sambil malas-malasan untuk datang. Bukan itu saja, hari ini ada les hingga jam dua siang jadi jadwalnya mepet sekali.

Sepanjang jalan menuju sekolah sempat mengira-ngira, acaranya bakal seperti apa yah? Mungkin kayak ibu-ibu PKK yang bikin kue bareng atau bikin kerajinan tangan? :D lucu kali ya kalau programnya begitu. Sesampai di tempat pertemuan, kaget sekaligus tidak pede karena yang didepan semua pakai seragam, warna oranye, terus disuruh masuk. Agh, lega, tidak semua kok seragaman.

Oke, ini darma wanita dinas pendidikan yang artinya beranggotakan istri-istri dari bapak yang kerja di dinas pendidikan plus guru-guru yang pasti berada didalam di dinas pendidikan. Masih sempat juga bertanya kiri kanan (saya boleh ikutan gitu? :D). Untunglah, acaranya tidak sedramatis yang saya bayangkan, it’s just simply good. Ada materi yang ibu-ibu sekali juga ada makan-makan :). Trus ada mars dan hymne-nya juga (yang pas semua nyanyi, saya senyam senyum sendiri..let's google that stuffs... biar besok-besok udah tahu)

PAK: Ribet dan Melelahkan

Setelah mengalami weekend yang sendu karena ada yang sakit, hari ini dimulai dengan ritme beat berlatar hip hop. Pagi di tempat kerja sudah dimulai dengan letupan-letupan kecil pemicu esmosi, well emosi buruk maksudnya.

Karena kemaren ada urusan keluarga jadilah ternyata DP3 alias nilai alias raport atau sejenis itulah tertinggal manis dengan senyum sendu merayu minta di tanda tangani oleh beberapa pihak. Sukseslah saya bingung binti sekarat di pagi hari karena tidak tahu harus berbuat apa. Tidak bisa berkendara sendiri akan membuatku gila kurasa.

Kenapalah saya harus bingung padahal biasanya cuek saja dan bisa dikatakan tidak peduli karena pada awalnya saya tidak memahami apa fungsi kertas-kertas ajaib ini nantinya. Meski tidak peduli, saya tetap menyimpan kertas apapun dengan baik kecuali jika tercecer di tempat lain. Semua kertas-kertas bermerk, bertanda tangan itu ternyata dibutuhkan (sangat) dalam proses kenaikan pangkat. Saya pikir tidak ada untungnya naik pangkat begitu cepat, toh bikin pusing saja. Tapi ternyata jika tidak diurus sekarang juga, maka saya akan sangat dipersulit oleh beragam hal dari aturan yang terus diperbaharui untuk prosesi kenaikan pangkat yang sakral ini. Jadilah, dengan seperempat hati awalnya saya harus melakukan banyak hal, tidak terlalu banyak persisnya hanya datang ke tukang fotokopi, fotokopi lagi dan lagi. Karena saya tidak terlihat enggan, Tuhan mulai mengingatkan dengan tercecernya beberapa helai, bayangkan malam ini saya hanya kehilangan satu lembar saja tapi saya akan langsung mati tepar besok jika tidak ketemu. Alhasil saya mengeluarkan jurus memencet tombol 008 dan bisa bernapas lega demi mendapatkan kertas cantik tersebut.

PAK, bukan Pak guru yang saya taksir, bukan juga Pak camat yang tidak ada hubungannya sama sekali dalam kasus ini. PAK alias Penetapan Angka Kredit yang diperlukan seorang guru ketika ia mau naik pangkat (weh). PAK ini terdiri dari sedikit sekali item tapi dengan banyak tumpukan kertas-kertas tadi. Well, saya merasa terbebani harus menuliskan apa saja kelengkapan PAK ini agar besok-besok saat saya lupa bisa mengakses disini. Tahukah mereka bahwa saya sangat pelupa tentang banyak hal, memori saya tertutup untuk beberapa item dan cenderung menampilkan yang sederhana saja sekarang ini.

Perkara dokumen yang dilengkapi juga bikin ribet dan sesuatu. Tanya kesini harus 3 rangkap, tanya kesana 2 rangkap, tanya yang lain lagi satu rangkap. Alhasil saya jadi ruwet sendiri dan memutuskan untuk berhibernasi dan melupakan urusan ini. Tapi malang tak dapat ditolak, kepala sekolah saya menginginkan semua dokumen ada di meja beliau besok pagi. See, hingga sekarang saya masih harus mumet karena belum selesai tapi berhubung bosan berarti saatnya berselancar :)

Setelah tadi memastikan sepasti-pastinya apa saja yang harus dilengkapi, ini dia list dokumen yang harus dipenuhi:

Disusun berdasarkan daftar usulan. Yang harus digarisbawahi SK yang diikutkan hanya SK yang ada nama yang bersangkutan, kemudian perhitungan nilai yang tertera harus memiliki bukti fisik berupa SK. Well semua fotokopi harus di legalisir dan di tanda tangani kepala sekolah.

Mudah-mudahan berhasil, masih deg-degan, masih H2C.
